Offset Greenhouse Gases Emissions

What is carbon offset?

A carbon offset is assumed to be a financial instrument which shows greenhouse gases emission reduction. Carbon offset is measured in units of metric tons of Carbon dioxide (CO2) one of the six main types of gases. One carbon offset is equivalent to one metric ton of (CO2e).

How to Buy a Carbon Offset?

Individuals and businesses are taking keen interest in carbon offsetting, giving them opportunities to participate in global warming solutions. The basic idea behind carbon offsetting is to develop an outline of our personal contribution towards the global warming in terms of our activities such as driving, flying or home energy use. This contribution is considered to be our carbon footprint mainly refers to carbon dioxide. We can balance our carbon footprints by buying carbon offsets. We can invest our contributions towards greenhouse gases reduction through projects which produce clean energy that replaces the energy production from fossil fuel. Wind farms project is a good example of such projects. In this way carbon offsets help us take our own responsibility towards adoption environmental friendly activities.

There are two main types of carbon offset's markets. On a larger side companies, governments and other big entities buy carbon offsets equivalent to the total amount of carbon dioxide they are allowed to emit over a specific period of time. According to a survey, about $5.5billion of carbon dioxide was purchased through this market over the year 2006. This purchased amount of carbon dioxide represents nearly 1.6 billion metric tons of reduction in carbon dioxide.

On the smaller side market, individual, companies or government purchase the carbon offset to lessen the CO2 generated from transportation, electricity use and other sources. It can be demonstrated by an individualís purchase of carbon offset that compensate the GreenHouse Gases (GHG) emissions, originated from the personal air travel of car driving. According to an estimate about $91 million of carbon offsets were purchased in this voluntary market in 2006. This amount of carbon offsets represents a reduction of 24 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emission.

Carbon offsets are originated from emission reduction projects. The most common practices of such projects are farms, biomass energy, or hydroelectric dams. Other common types of such projects are energy efficiency projects, the destruction of industrial pollutants or agricultural byproducts, destruction of landfill methane, and forestry projects. Participants involved in such projects can purchase and withdraw emissions trading credits.

Understanding how offsetting works?

By purchasing a carbon offset you impact the earth you live on by ensuring that this purchase leads to an equal amount of GHG emission reduction somewhere on this planet. Generally with some projects emission reduction does not occur rather it prevents the new emissions of GreenHouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. In any case benefit goes to the environment. Every offset provider has his own way of how he is going to reduce or stop emission reduction. Moreover sponsors of these projects can initiate such projects anywhere on to the earth ranging from methane digesters at dairies in Minnesota to wind farms somewhere.

Why Carbon Offsets?

Carbon offset helps you to initiate action on global warming. By offsetting your carbon footprints you can support the GHG emission reduction project and play your role in a GreenHouse Gases' (GHG) emission free climate.

Carbon offsets are considered to be a more efficient measure for any individual to fight against global warming while reducing or stopping the CO2 emission reduction.

Effects of climate change are very much seen now and its time to act. Carbon Services provides you an economical way of fighting against climate change. It can be done either by removals or sinks of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (e.g. by planting trees or managing forests), or by reducing emissions (e.g. by curbing deforestation).

The role of trees in offsetting your emissions

Trees act as natural filter for our air. Their process of photosynthesis- through which they absorb carbon dioxide (a key GreenHouse Gas and principle contributor to global warming) from the atmosphere and store it in their trunk, branches, leaves, roots, soil and foliage, while releasing out oxygen back into the atmosphere. So we should try to plant more trees in order to reduce Greenhouse Gases especially carbon dioxide (CO2) from the environment.

Some other methods such as deforestation, degradation and poor forest management reduce carbon storage in forests, sustainable management, planting, and rehabilitation of forests can increase carbon sequestration.

Trees are an effective source of absorbing and storing the carbon you emit; they have long lasting benefits not limited to air filtering only.

Carbon Services as emission reduction consultants participates in projects that increase the GreenHouse Gases (GHG) reduction from atmosphere. This Emission Reduction can be achieved by planting trees, managing forest or by reducing emission.

We welcome you to join us and consult us to protect environment for future generations. Here, we provide you help regarding how to balance your emissions either by purchasing or selling carbon offsets.
